On this day in Blues history for August 18th…

On this day in 1956, Elvis Presley’s version of “Hound Dog” enters the R&B chart at number eleven. Backed with “Don’t Be Cruel”, it spent the next eleven weeks at number one. On the same day Peacock re-released Big Mama Thornton’s original version. Big Mama’s version had reached number one on the R&B chart in 1953, but failed to get much attention this time around.

On this day in 1958, the only chart-topping record to originate in Italy, “Volare (Nel Blu Dipinto Di Blu),” by Domenico Modugno, reached number one.

Today’s show features music performed by Elvis Presley and Jimmy Witherspoon
